Last Tuesday, November 27, 2018, Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) held the last Sparrows Point High School Capacity Study public input meeting at Bear Creek Elementary School in Bear Creek.

Of the five parents who attended the un-publicized final SPHS capacity input meeting none were students or parents or teachers or alumni of Sparrows Point High School.

The input meeting was the last. The  BCPS school board votes this December 11 and 18, 2018 at the Greenwood Campus on Charles Street at 6 PM of which one of three purposed “scenarios,” will  be recommend to solve SPHS school overcrowding.

Scenarios A and B calls for an addition to SPHS and Scenario C calls for the total replacement of the SPHS.

The issue Sparrows Point Middle and High Schools are physically connect was raised.  BCPS officials refused to address the question, at all.

Fort Howard Community Association is requesting BCPS suspends voting on the overcrowding capacity issue at the December 11 and 18 meetings until the Sparrows Point Middle/High School parents, teachers, resident, and other stakeholders have all their questions answered regarding Sparrows Point Middle and High Schools.

This meeting should have been clearly publicized in the Sparrows Point neighborhood. Local residents deserved notification. There should be No vote on the school issue until parents of students in SPHS and SpMS have an opportunity to be heard. Both schools are above capacity. The building is in horrible condition, with air and heating problems, mold and continuous plumbing problems. It is extremely hard having to share a cafeteria, gym, library and auditorium. Students cannot even go to the library to find a quiet place to do research or study. Because throughout the day, it is used as a lunchroom. It is not right that a vote on this issue does not include those who are affected most by it.

Our community is very involved and if we had known there is no doubt it would have been attended.

Shame on BCPS for not holding this meeting in our school (SPHS/ SPMS) – the schools in question AND for failing to let everyone know about it. We get robo calls from the interim Superintendent, Principal, etc about holidays, events and such. Surely parents, teachers, and staff deserved a robo call and email about this important meeting/event. Surely if a meeting & THE AGENDA is publicized we would have more turnout and concern. Seems like an attempt to silence our community. Delay the vote, publish new meeting agenda/ voting options & hold meeting at SPHS/SPMS auditorium…let the true stakeholders have a say in it. We are the taxpayers and should have some say in what happens in our community!
