Maryland Department of Natural Resources was kind to report on the discolored water color in Jones Creek and Old Road Bay pictured above..

It is an algae bloom caused by the species Prorocentrum minimum– also called Mahagony Tide.

Prorocentrum is typically a Spring Bloom species in the Bay. DNR crews were out today, December 10, 2019, monitoring and it is blooming throughout the Patapsco. The bloom should die back with the colder temperatures heading our way tonight.

Thank you DNR for the heads up!
