For two generations Fort Howard residents have been plagued with particulate and noxious air emitted from various industrial stationary and mobile sources at adjacent Sparrows Point Peninsula across Old Road Bay.
The Clean Air Act was the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s federal response to those decades establishing a set of principal air pollutants: carbon monoxide (CO), lead (Pb), nitrogen dioxide(NO2), ozone (O3), particulate matter (PM), and sulfur dioxide (SO2).
With Delaware based Sparrows Point developer Tradepoint Atlantic, Inc. projecting tractor trailer traffic upwards of 28,000 trips per day, berth accommodations for nine super-Panamax vessels, and rail transportation rolling stock numbered in the tens of thousands per week, a new set of human health and environmental challenges will compound the existing 100 year legacy of unregulated toxicity at the site.
Fort Howard Community Association is fighting for the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) place air monitoring devices ensuring the health of Fort Howard residents for the next 100 years as the Chesapeake Bay heals.
